Three thoughts on love – 1 Corinthians 13

Much is taught about love from this text. Called Charity in the KJV it is seen as the highest.

1Co 13:13    And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

What I note in this verse beyond the obvious priority, supported by all the earlier descriptive verses, is also that all three abide in the believer. One way of seeing what is implied in this is to understand.

Faith – to be our understanding of all that has transpired in the past, all that has gone before us all that is written in the Old and New Testament….the foundation of our belief.

We begin to see this in Hebrews 11 the faith chapter…

Heb 11:1    Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Heb 11:2    For by it the elders obtained a good report.

Heb 11:3    Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

It is in the past that we see and learn from those who lived by faith as an example for us.
It is by faith we believe both the written word of God the Bible and the living word of God..Jesus.
This is why the word believe is so important, it is rooted on the solid foundation of Scripture and on the Rock, Jesus himself….who is witnessed to us by the prophets, the apostles and the Bible, through the Holy Spirit, and in his resurrection, which we celebrate tomorrow.

Rom 10:17    So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

1Co 15:12    Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

1Co 15:13    But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

1Co 15:14    And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

1Co 15:15    Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

1Co 15:16    For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

1Co 15:17    And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

1Co 15:18    Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

1Co 15:19    If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

Hope – in one sense the future, ultimately our hope for eternal life with Christ.

Rom 8:23    And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Rom 8:24    For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

Rom 8:25    But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Gal 5:5    For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

Tit 1:2    In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Love – this of course is the highest, and perhaps it is so because in this life it is how we day by day live out the other two….our love of God and man in the first and second commands is done in this present life. We live our lives in the present…day by day…as Paul writes below..and labour of love
Paul links all these together again in this passage…

1Th 1:2    We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;

1Th 1:3    Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;

1Th 1:4    Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

I think Peter would make the case that these three ultimately come from God.

1Pe 1:21    Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

1Pe 1:22    Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

The second point is to not miss the fruitless work of our own righteousness.

1Co 13:1    Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

1Co 13:2    And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

1Co 13:3    And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Oh, how easy it would be if we could just do all these things and get our free pass to heaven, perhaps we could even be as the Pharisee….who could say..

Luk 18:10    Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

Luk 18:11    The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

Luk 18:12    I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

Luk 18:13    And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Luk 18:14    I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Of course Jesus did exhort one rich young ruler to give all his wealth away..he thought he had righteously obeyed. But Jesus showed that man can only go so far but not far enough.

Mat 19:25    When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?

Mat 19:26    But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Mat 19:20    The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

Mat 19:21    Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

In other texts God reveals that none are righteous.

Isa 41:26  Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous? yea, there is none that sheweth, yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that heareth your words.

Isa 57:1  The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.

Rom 3:10  As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Psalms 14:1   (KJV)

1  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Yet Jesus says…

Mat 5:48    Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

There is a better way to be made perfect, in Christ.

Rom 12:1    I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Rom 12:2    And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

2Co 12:9    And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Col 1:27    To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Col 1:28    Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

Col 1:29    Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

Heb 13:20    Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

Heb 13:21    Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Jesus prays as our high priest and mediator for us.

Joh 17:20    Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Joh 17:21    That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Joh 17:22    And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

Joh 17:23    I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Finally, this verse is almost forgotten in the preaching of this passage.

1Co 13:6    Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

My reading in 3rd John expands this…
3Jn 1:1  The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.

3Jn 1:3  For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.

3Jn 1:4  I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

3Jn 1:8  We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.

3Jn 1:12  Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.

John Gill also helps us to understand the depth of both iniquity and truth.

1 Corinthians 13:6 Gill

Rejoiceth not in iniquity,…. Neither in his own, nor in others; but on the contrary is grieved for it; he mourns over his own iniquities, the corruption of his heart, the infirmities of his life, his secret sins, which none know but God and his own soul; he is greatly troubled at the profaneness and immorality of the men of the world, and the sins of professors cut him to the heart: nor does he rejoice in injustice, as the word used here may be rendered, in any unjust action or injury, that may be done to any, yea, even to an enemy; even as Christ, when Peter, in great zeal for him, drew his sword and cut off the ear of one of the high priest’s servants, who was more busy than the rest in apprehending Christ, and showed more malignancy than others, was so far from rejoicing at it, that he was displeased with Peter for doing it, and was moved with so much compassion to that man, though his enemy, as to heal him: but rejoiceth in the truth; in the truth of the Gospel, and the success of it; such an one can do nothing against it, but for it, will buy it at any rate, but sell it upon no account whatever; and he rejoices greatly when he sees any walking in it, and agreeably to it; for truth, as it stands opposed to iniquity or unrighteousness, may signify an upright, holy, and righteous conversation, a conversation becoming the Gospel of Christ, which that teaches, and by which it is adorned; now a gracious soul desires this in itself, and delights to see it in others.
