As I find articles, I will post to the top of this list.
I’m closing out posting to this post as of 11-13-24.
Hopefully the next one I will shorten my own comments to a sentence or two and the link to the article I read. This first try seems too long.
I wanted to add one more link before closing out the week.
In the article below on the Downgrade there is a link to a session of teaching about J Gresham Machen’s Christianity and Liberalism. I’ve read the book, but plan on buying the series, and our men’s reading group will watch it and read the book. Here is the direct link too it, which is buried in my earlier post.
You can buy the series here…
C H SPURGEON’S DOWNGRADE CONTROVERSY
Excellent topic. Be sure to read the whole article and view the short videos. Including the last Useful Idiots link.
“In the famous controversy, Spurgeon had four main grievances with the men of his denomination, the Baptist Union. He summarizes them in one of the early articles that precipitated the Downgrade Controversy, “We cannot hold the inspiration of the Word, and yet reject it; we cannot believe in the atonement and deny it;… we cannot recognize the punishment of the impenitent and yet indulge the ‘larger hope.’ One way or the other we must go. Decision is the virtue of the hour.”[2]”
“Here we see that Spurgeon was concerned that some within the denomination were either flirting with, or in some cases openly promoting the following errors:
- The denial of the infallibility of Scripture.
- The denial of the necessity and substitutionary nature of Christ’s atonement.
- The denial of the existence and eternality of hell.
- The affirmation of universalism.[3]”
“Whatever one may notice about the above list, at least two things should stand out.
First, all four of these issues are doctrinal issues. Second, not only are they doctrinal, but they are matters of basic Christian orthodoxy, of first importance, and have to do with doctrines that have been universally affirmed by the church throughout its history. The infallibility of Scripture, the necessity and substitutionary nature of the atonement, the existence of an eternal hell, and the doctrine of divine wrath for all those who do not possess true saving faith in Christ are doctrines as old as Christianity itself. To deny them is to deny some of the most basic tenets of the Christian faith. In other words, Spurgeon’s stand in the Downgrade Controversy, simply put, was about defending matters of basic Christian orthodoxy. These were the only issues that would lead him to withdraw from his denomination in the autumn of 1887.”
Btw, I’m a great fan of Machen and his book referenced.
In the follow on article you get Dr. Martin Lloyd John’s sermon.
THE TRUMPETS IN REVELATION – MARTYN LLOYD-JONES
That sermon will be particularly interesting as our Revelation class gets to those chapters.
Below is a tough one. And like the author says, do check out all those YouTube people we watch, including himself.
Steve Lawson: Truth Finally Comes Out…
It’s about Doctrine. I agree. I’m not sure just being part of a “local” church is the total solution… I made the comment.
Definitely uncomfortable. Reading comments some infer smaller is better, but being a part of a local (that definitely gets skewed by the multi-site, or mega, or Tele/Online model) is a start. But doctrines are all over the place in our churches. We need a good definition…I tend towards one of Historical Confessional Reformed Bible teaching. There is a reason we have Confessions and Catechisms, not to put them on a shelf, but to Confess them together and test ourselves with the Q&A’s. Hardly anyone does that.
Heidelblog has an article that follow along with the aspects of false teaching I’ve been studying now that the election is over.
I might add….
I watched a series of rather long videos that present a quite troubling view of much of the history behind some of these “modern” church trends. I’m happy to share and watch with you if you have a mind to look at them. Perhaps 🤔 I’m seeing this all wrong but I don’t think so.
Btw. There was a time when God was directing man in his ways. Paul is an example..
Ephesians 3:7-13 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. 8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: 12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. 13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
On the political front there was an interesting summary here:
Perhaps another reason Trump selected Vance is he recently converted to the Roman Catholic faith. I’m not sure 🤔 I agree with his doing this. Check out:
Btw, between Halloween and the Election, we may have missed reviewing our Protestant History on Reformation Day. In this short 20 minute video Todd Friel mentions Vance’s conversion, what’s happening to others and give a whirlwind tour of a few forgotten points in our faith.
You can skip through the ads.
You can learn more about the Catholic faith here.
Another one on the election. I was doing some stats on historical voting yesterday and saw the same thing. You can read the left spin on this here. And briefly about the counter point. But perhaps 🤔 it was just that some people just still couldn’t vote Trump, but really couldn’t vote Harris either so didn’t pull the lever? As of today 11/9 they got 145m, with Trump’s lead down to 4m, one big state CA still has more to validate. Overall US, the totals might go up to 149m…which is 6m less than 2020….or 4%. So I’d say that many just didn’t show up. Plus during Covid-19 what else was there to do other than vote!
Elizabeth Prata has been running a series of posts on false teachers. This may be particularly difficult for women since they often have a tendency for more Empathy. If you read back in her posts she mentions a few names, but be aware they may be some of your favorites.
Btw, I’m reading the book….
“In Toxic Empathy, Allie Beth Stuckey argues that empathy has become a tool of manipulation by left-wing activists who bully people into believing that they must adopt progressive positions to be loving. She explores the five most heated issues through which toxic empathy is deployed: abortion, gender, sexuality, immigration, and social justice. Progressives use catchy mantras to present their perspective as empathetic, like “abortion is healthcare,” “love is love,” or “no human being is illegal,” but in each case, they ignore the other side of the moral equation. For example, abortion is presented as compassionate for the woman, but what about the human life the procedure kills?”
