Are we a Liberal or Progressive Church?

The articles below covers a lot of familiar but controversial ground. You can judge for yourself if it is useful. Btw, if you look at the little video link you can see why I might be trading my KJV Bible in for one of the new My Bibles. I think they are developing that with a culturally sensitive AI routine.

I sometimes read this site.

It does appear that over the last 50-60 years, 100 years if one goes back and reads Machen’s old book, that progress Christianity is the way of the church.

Christianity and Liberalism Paperback 1923

by  J. Gresham Machen  (Author)

As for my own study, I’m only a few pages from finishing Vos’ Commentary of the Westminster Larger Catechism, and I can highly recommend it as a text that throughly and correctly teaches through the historical doctrines of the Bible. As such it is a useful guide, though still not the highest authority which remains the Bible.

The Scriptures, the Bible and its teachings (Doctrine) are so important.

2 Timothy 3:10-17 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, 11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Timothy 4:2-4 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Btw, Mike Ratliff recently did a post about Fables.

From The Watchman’s Bagpipes Webpost

Isn’t that so true.

Fables.

You can read that in the link above.

Quote from the article below.

…….the first of the Five Solas is Sola Scriptura or Scripture Alone. Matt Slick at CARM points out in “What are the Five Solas?”:

This does not mean that tradition or councils are not considered. It means that the Scriptures alone are the final and the highest authority.  Everything that the Scriptures address are to be used as the final word on that topic. All things that we learn from other sources must be compared to Scripture, and if they do not match Scripture or if they contradict Scripture, then we are not to affirm them. The Bible says not to exceed what is written (1 Corinthians 4:6).

On the other hand, Prima Scriptura, as this Wiki article points out, “has other sources of divine revelation”:

Implicitly, this view suggests that, besides canonical scripture, there can be other guides for what a believer should believe and how they should live, such as the Holy Spirit, created order, traditions, charismatic gifts, mystical insight, angelic visitations, conscience, common sense, the views of experts, the spirit of the times or something else.

Sola Scriptura directs us to focus on God and His holiness and to grow in holiness ourselves as we are conformed to the image of Christ. We fully accept that God’s view of right and wrong, spelled out in the scriptures, is completely RIGHT and does not change.

Prima Scriptura changes direction and puts the focus on us. Progressives are working to conform the word of God to reflect their deeply flawed human image.
