I sent one final note to the leader of our Revelation Sunday School this morning…..…hopefully our class is over today.
I got up early this morning and decided to read the last two chapters of Revelation again.
It’s not so much an interpretation but just a statement aspects of the vision.
What struck me was the 2nd event when John tried to worship the angel. I highlighted this in Bold in the text, also the 1st, but I repeat them just below. As I read that again, it appeared that it is possible that this is describing the same event. And maybe the events throughout this whole series of chapter aren’t really sequential but more of a retelling of the same end times events from different perspectives.
Revelation 22:8-10 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. 10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
Another hint at this is I can’t imagine Christ ruling for the thousand years would be in a city other than the new Jerusalem…with all the spendor described in the last two chapters. Though there does seem to be a sequence to the destruction of the Dragon’s Kingdom. Anyway it’s a hard timing to follow and we are not given to know the final timing.
Mat 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
One thing John didn’t disclose was:
Revelation 10:4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.
Though John does go on to write about the multiple troubles upon the earth and the final endings. But there may have been things left out we don’t need to know.
The AI Overview is not a bad summary of these.
In the Book of Revelation, “woes,” “trumpets,” “thunders,” “vials,” and “bowls” are symbolic elements describing God’s judgments and the events leading up to the end times, with the “woes” marking periods of increased demonic activity, the “trumpets” signaling specific judgments, the “thunders” being a part of the seventh trumpet, and the “vials/bowls” representing the final judgments poured out on the earth.
AI Overview
Here’s a more detailed explanation:
- Woes:The book of Revelation mentions three “woes” (Revelation 8:13; 9:12; 11:14; 18:10, 16, 19), marking periods of increased demonic activity and the events leading up to the battle of Armageddon.
- Trumpets:The seven trumpets are sounded by seven angels, each blast bringing forth a specific judgment upon the earth, described in detail in Revelation chapters 8 to 11.
- Thunders:The seventh trumpet is described as bringing forth “flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm”.
- Vials/Bowls:The seven bowls (or vials) are filled with God’s wrath and are poured out on the earth by seven angels, bringing forth the final judgments, as described in Revelation 16.
- The Sequence of Events:The book of Revelation outlines a sequence of events, including the seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven bowls, each representing a progressively worse judgment upon the earth.
Old John Gill made this short comment on one verse.
Rev 11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, and great hail.
Which image is repeated with the seventh angel and seventh vial.
Revelation 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.
Gill:
Though I suspect, that these several things are expressive of the change and revolution that will be made after a time, in this happy and comfortable state; and that the cold, which generally attends an hail storm, represents that coldness and lukewarmness, into which the churches of Christ will again sink, expressed in the Laodicean church state, in which condition Christ will find them when he personally appears; so that the seven seals, with the seven trumpets, bring us exactly to the same period of time as the seven churches do.
Getting back to the New Jerusalem, I do wonder why the city needs walls and gates, though they are always open.
And who are these who are without?
Rev 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
The ending verses:
Revelation 22:6-7 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. 7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
Appear to be repetitive and John’s intent on wrapping up the vision with a summary of the ending.
Likewise the text even at the end alludes to the division of the elect and the non-elect.
Revelation 22:11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
Revelation 22:14-15 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
And just to review. We were introduced first to the Red Dragon.
Revelation 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
Later just called the dragon. And we are give an old historical event.
Rev 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,Rev 12:8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.Initially the dragon pursues the woman. Not the harlot later in the text who rides the beast. But…then directs attention to the remnant.Revelation 12:13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.Quickly after that we see the First Beast, and it’s description and both the Dragon and the Beast are worshiped..
Revelation 13:1-4 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
The Second Beast is closely connected, as is the Image of the Beast, both have power and drive worship, intermixed are miracles, wonder, awe and wrath.
Rev 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.Rev 13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.Rev 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,Rev 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.Rev 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.Rev 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
I asked, Steve as the math guy…do you might understand the command to count…interesting he didn’t say see it, but count it? Lot’s of discussion evolves around these.
Lot’s of action is described in the next few chapters leading up to this statement and the final seven vials. The reference to Frogs and miracles is interesting.
Revelation 16:13-14 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.Rev 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.Rev 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
The remaining focus of the book seems to be on the events of this seventh vial with the description of the Great Whore, or Harlot, the woman who rode or reigned/controlled the Beast..i.e. the First Beast from the description and Babylon.
Revelation 16:17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
Revelation 17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
Rev 17:2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
Rev 17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Rev 17:4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
Rev 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
Rev 17:6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
It’s interesting that we are revealed this detail…and the text when you read the whole chapter gives a lot of explanation, yet even to this day interpreting the images and explanation remains unclear!
As for the overall ending, one thing we can count on it will happen.
Anyway it’s a bit long…but it’s interesting to try reading the chapters backwards, I picked a not too few verses to illustrate how John saw it ending…….

Revelation 20:7-10 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Judgment Before the Great White Throne
Rev 20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

Rev 19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
Rev 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Revelation 18:18-24 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! 19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. 20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. 21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. 22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; 23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.
The Great Prostitute and the Beast
Rev 17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:

Rev 17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.
Rev 17:10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
Rev 17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. 17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. 18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. 19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. 20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
