I was getting a bit uncomfortable about seeming to be the only person lately making regular comments on Mike’s Posts. I’m taking a break and will just repost to my few readers on my own blog.
Mike makes a good point here. But I really like the way the old KJV phrases this verse. I think it better reflects what Mike is doing in this post….teach about Christ and helping to bring others into and deeper in the faith.
I believe from the context he would agree that: God call’s and makes disciples. Man doesn’t actually make disciples. I just think it’s clearer this way. We are teaching. It’s the work of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit to make them.
If misinterpreted most of the modern translations could imply we make disciples. I do understand the underlying Greek text definition implies the teaching as part of what we call disciplining. But I prefer using the teaching definition directly.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
You can see back in the prior chapter the same Greek word μαθητεύω mathēteuō being used appropriately calling Joseph one of Jesus’ disciples.
Matthew 27:57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:
