My wife and I started a new year of Bible Reading, using a bit different approach…One might call this the Slow Method.
We decide to read the Gospel of John, over 250 days, that’s 50 weekday through out 2026.
Last year was a bit hard in my observation with our covering the entire Bible in the year, with each of us read certain chapters aloud each day from our respective go to Bible versions Her’s the NIV; Mine the KJV. I have to admit it was hard to follow each other’s version.
As discussed elsewhere over the years I progressed from various “modern” version finally in my late 60’s being challenged by someone to pick up and use the KJV. I’ve never gone back. You can read more about that here:
Anyway, this breaks down to about 3-5 verse a day. After a couple days reading, I do find it a struggle. Partly between the two versions. And partly, figuring out what to talk about in the verses…Particular words, cross references to other scriptures, looking up those Bible verses, and reading my favorite commentary…i.e. Old John Gill, which although parsed by verse phrases, can get a bit long. His comment on this opening thought is a good example, look it up.
John 1:1
In the beginning was the word,….
Anyway I’m sure I will post on this again if I figure out how to make the slow reading flow work….
One side benefit is that when I encountered Mike Ratliff’s post this morning, I spent a long time reading it. I share it as being quite impressive. Mike lately is capturing a lot of my same thought’s and expressing them well so I quote him frequently. Although he is not one of the big name popular Evangelical personalities, he does have quite a long history of teaching and writing on faith.
On this post one thing that really impressed me was how synergistic the Apostles, Peter, Paul and John are on this topic. Right off the bat, Peter in Mike’s opening passage say exactly the same thing, my wife and I have been reading in the opening verse of the Gospel of John.
1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
John will go on in Chapter 3 and describe Jesus’ detail account of being born again.
And note as you read Mike’s post note all the references to Paul’s writing about how to live out our lives in Christ.
Anyway, perhaps you can see that slowing down and focusing on a few verses actually can lead very deeply into a great deal of Biblical Truth.
The words I use in the title to this Post will come up again and again I our reading of John’s Gospel.
