The End of the Age…..

Mike Ratliff has two posts related to this.

This has stimulated a few random thoughts…

I’m not sure this is helpful but at least read Mike’s posts.

On his latest post he mentions:

“The KJV and the Geneva translates this as “within.” That makes it seem as if the kingdom of God was within the Pharisees. However, the three words translated above as “within you” is εντος υμων εστιν referring to the kingdom of God being in their midst.” Luke 17:21 Here are the verses.

KJV Luke 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is {c} within you.

(c) You look around for the Messiah as though he were absent, but he is amongst you in the midst of you.

I think the Geneva note is most useful to avoid any confusion. And in fact I thin Old John Gill’s commentary actually makes it very understandable and may be a better explanation that Mike’s which you can read in the Link.

for behold the kingdom of God is within you: in the elect of God among the Jews, in their hearts; it being of a spiritual nature, and lying in righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost; in the dispossession of Satan, the strong man armed; in the putting down of the old man, sin, with its deceitful lusts, from the throne; and in setting up a principle of grace, as a governing one; and so escapes the observation of natural men, and cannot be pointed at as here, or there:

the kingdom of God is among you; and the meaning be, that the king Messiah was already come, and was among them, and his kingdom was already set up, of which the miracles of Christ were a full proof; and if they could not discern these signs of the times, and evident appearances of the kingdom of God among them, they would never be able to make any observation of it, hereafter, or elsewhere.

Also as you read through these passages and Mike’s comments.

Notice the time of deception and false prophets and false christs…and affliction, persecution, and tribulation for the saint/elect.

Mat 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

Mat 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.   

Mat 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.   

 

Mat 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.   

 

Mat 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.   

 

Mat 24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

Mat 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.   

 

Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Mat 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.   

 

Mat 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.   

Mat 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.   

All God’s elect are included..there is a passage in John where Jesus might have be talking with the same Pharisees a those in Luke 17…

Jhn 6:36  But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

Jhn 6:37  All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Jhn 6:38  For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

Jhn 6:39  And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

Jhn 6:40  And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Jhn 6:41  The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

 

There is a need for a delay in Christ’s return (so every generation needs to be watchful), we get some insight on this in Revelation.

 

Rev 6:10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

Rev 6:11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.        

 

There is this negative side of the end of the age also.

Mat 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;

Mat 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Mat 13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.   

 

Peter writes about this with these words….

The Day of the Lord Will Come   

Notice that in verse 9, the “all”, will be referring to all the elect throughout all time.

The Geneva Bible notes, explicitly say that:

2 Peter 3:9

3:9 {8} The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; {9} but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

(8) The Lord will surely come, because he has promised: and neither sooner nor later than he has promised.

(9) A reason why the last day does not come too soon, because God patiently waits until all the elect are brought to repentance, that none of them may perish.

2Pe 3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

2Pe 3:2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

2Pe 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

2Pe 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

2Pe 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

2Pe 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

2Pe 3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

2Pe 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.   

 

The most complex interpretation of these texts is in the understanding of the words “This generation”

Mat 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.   

 

Mrk 13:30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.   

 

John Gill Comments:

Mark 13:30   

Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass,…. Not the generation of men, in general, or Jews in particular, nor of Christians; but that present generation of men, they should not all go off the stage of life,   

till all these things be done; which were now predicted by Christ, concerning the destruction of Jerusalem, the signs of it, and what, should immediately follow upon it; See Gill on Mat 24:34.   

 

Matthew 24:34    Geneva

24:34 Verily I say unto you, This {t} generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.   

(t) This age: the word “generation” or “age” is here being used for the men of this age.   

 

It’s not entirely clear to me if this refers to signs that some see in the transfiguration. Or more likely, that some of his disciples like John will live through the destruction of Jerusalem, or how this relates to some living at the final end of the age will experience all of the last days events…the persecution that comes, the rule of the anti-christ, and the final tribulation. I do agree Mike is correct there is no “free pass to GO” or “get out of jail free card” as in Monopoly, those living in then that time, even the elect will go through it, until Jesus actually does come and take them.

 

Matthew 16:28 (KJV)   

28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Matthew 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

 

till all these things were fulfilled; see Mat 16:28 as many did, and as there is reason to believe they might, and must, since all these things had their accomplishment, in and about forty years after this: and certain it is, that John, one of the disciples of Christ, outlived the time by many years; and, as Dr. Lightfoot observes, many of the Jewish doctors now living, when Christ spoke these words, lived until the city was destroyed; as Rabban Simeon, who perished with it, R. Jochanan ben Zaccai, who outlived it, R. Zadoch, R. Ishmael, and others: this is a full and clear proof, that not anything that is said before, relates to the second coming of Christ, the day of judgment, and end of the world; but that all belong to the coming of the son of man, in the destruction of Jerusalem, and to the end of the Jewish state.   

 

From Mat 16:28

till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom; which is not to be understood of his personal coming in his kingdom in the last day, when he will judge quick and dead; for it cannot be thought, that any then present should live to that time, but all tasted of death long before, as they have done; for the story of John’s being alive, and to live till then, is fabulous, and grounded on a mistake which John himself has rectified at the close of his Gospel: nor of the glorious transfiguration of Christ, the account of which immediately follows; when he was seen by Peter, James, and John, persons now present; for that, at most, was but an emblem and a pledge of his future glory: rather, of the appearance of his kingdom, in greater glory and power, upon his resurrection from the dead, and his ascension to heaven; when the Spirit was poured down in an extraordinary manner, and the Gospel was preached all over the world; was confirmed by signs and wonders, and made effectual to the conversion and salvation of many souls; which many then present lived to see, and were concerned in: though it seems chiefly to have regard to his coming, to show his regal power and authority in the destruction of the Jews; when those his enemies that would not he should reign over them, were ordered to be brought and slain before him; and this the Apostle John, for one, lived to be a witness of.
