Witnesses….Acts 10

Our pastor preached a good Easter Sunday sermon from this passage in Acts 10:

Gentiles Hear the Good News

Act 10:34  Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Act 10:35  But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Act 10:36  The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)

Act 10:37  That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

Act 10:38  How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Act 10:39  And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:

Act 10:40  Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;

Act 10:41  Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

Act 10:42  And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

Act 10:43  To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

Earlier in the week I had a conversation with our son-in-law who is currently serving on Jury duty. The discussion revolved around witnesses. Much can be said about this from the Bible, whether it be true and false witnessing, or how many witnesses are needed. But curiously there is much to learn from the above Acts 10 passage.

As Peter states, and this is not the first time he has said as much, but this is the first directly to the Gentiles, that there were really quite a number of witnesses, both to Jesus’ ministry and to his death and resurrection. We read in 1 Corinthians 15 (see below) of a number and even 500+ at one time.

This was not done in a vacuum as Paul will comment, before the king, during his own trial.

Acts 26:8  Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?

Acts 26:26  For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.

Yet, going back to Acts 10:42, not all people were witnesses of the resurrected Christ. Only those who God had chosen.

Back in John 17 we read that Jesus, has prayed for those to hear God’s word even those not present.

oh 17:8  For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

Joh 17:9  I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

Joh 17:10  And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

Joh 17:20  Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Joh 17:21  That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

We don’t need to be eyewitnesses to believe. But we do need to believe the witness of the witnesses.

Here are a few of the many verses on witnesses in the New Testament.

Luk 1:2  Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

Luk 24:48  And ye are witnesses of these things.
