The Gospel of Mark – Chapter 1

I’m always amazed at how quickly the gospel of Mark starts off. Events that are described at length in the other gospels are just directly stated and then Mark moves on to the next. Right here in chapter 1 there are many notable verses Just a few..

Mark 1:1  The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

Mark 1:3  The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Mark 1:11  And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

And Jesus’ first word of instruction, our call…

Mark 1:15  And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Peter would later echo this same message:

Act 2:37  Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Act 2:38  Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Act 2:39  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

One last note, Mark refers to Jesus’ authority over the devils in at least 26 verses, the 6 of which are in this opening chapter.

Note the people’s question of Jesus’ authority in verse 27.

We just finished yesterday reading where this authority comes from and just how extensive it is:

Matthew 28:18  And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
