Q. 7. What is God?
A. God is a Spirit, in and of himself infinite in being, glory, blessedness, and perfection; all-sufficient, eternal, unchangeable, incomprehensible, everywhere present, almighty, knowing all things, most wise, most holy, most just, most merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.
This is the first question that involves a very detail answer, having lots of points. There are numerous scripture proof verses referenced to support these points. We will see many more of the Q&A’s like this as we read further. Vos’ commentary gives some useful help in reflecting on many of these points. What I’ve found is that much more could be said and discussed, and that although a Christian for over 50 years many of these points are new to me.
Please note the qualifiers all and most that try to help us grasp the dimensions of God. Vos comments on this difficulty. His incomprehensible character.
1 Kings 8:27 But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?
“….of heavens cannot contain thee,” meaning that the whole created universe cannot “comprehend” or contain God: although the Bible speaks of God as the one Who “fillets all in all,” and although God is everywhere in the created universe, still God is so great that the whole universe cannot “contain” him–there is more beyond.”
Unfortunately we just don’t have teaching at this level in our churches anymore.
