For May 16th add one more of the great sermons by Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones.
It’s one of those days Friday the 13th. So far so good.
Mike Ratliff one of the best Bible bloggers is recovering and back with some limited posts.
Michelle Leslie repost an interesting list. The SBC has more than their share of issues this year.
Elizabeth Prater wrote today…..someone mentioned Martyn Lloyd-Jones. The Doctor, the man of Logic on Fire. I agreed he was a good one also. Aren’t we blessed in this day and age to have such opportunities to hear such men of God expound the word?!
……when the commenter mentioned Lloyd-Jones, it reminded me of a blog post I’d published a few years ago on MLJ’s sermon series on the Eternal Decrees of God. It’s the best sermon I’ve ever heard on the “Eternal Decrees of God”, and one of the best sermons I’ve heard on any topic, ever. It is by UK preacher from the last century, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and it’s 50 minutes long. This is the first sermon in his wonderful series, Great Biblical Doctrines. Please take a listen, I know you will be edified.
I recently purchased a copy of Logic of Fire 🔥 the DVD documentary on his life. Get a copy and watch it. I plan to listen to the sermon above, maybe the whole series. I also recommend Dr. S. Lewis Johnson’s sermons on the subject.
It’s May 10th, I’m getting a slow start. My focus has been on losing some weight using the advice of my wife’s friend who is a physician. A combination of Keto, extremely low carbs, reduced salt and snacks and intermittent fasts of 14-18 hours seems to be working. My base weight over the past 5 years had a floor, but would periodically peak up 5-9 pounds but never get below the floor. After two months I’ve knocked off 15-25 pounds depending on which beginning point I use and what today’s weight which is still subject to a few pounds of water weight variation. Something times it appears to fluctuate based on the moon cycle but I’ve never read anything supporting that theory. Not the daily tides but the moon phases.
The big temptation now is…
Anyway seems to work, I need to go for another baseline about 10 pounds lower. But so far it’s easier to hike, and my golf swing seems better, and a few people have noticed I look 👀 a bit thinner!
This got a bit long….
As for bloggers, my favorite Mike Ratliff has had serious heath issues so his team is repeating old posts. Pray for Mike’s recovery.
I’ve been reading more and more on the scriptural issues with women having authority in the church in the place of men. I still strongly comedown on the complementarian side. I may post a few articles I find useful.
For women reading my own blog I sometimes do post articles by women who also hold that position and focus their teaching on other women. I observe it’s easy to fall into the trap or appeal of the progressive egalitarian women. The potential for false teaching is just a prevalent today as it was in Old Testament and New Testament times.
Jeremiah 6:16-17 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. 17 Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.
Ezekiel 33:6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.
1 Timothy 4:1-3 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
Acts 20:29-31 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.
Jesus himself explicitly said to watch and be diligent..
Mark 13:35-37 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: 36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. 37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
Check out Michelle Leslie’s latest women’s conference, she probably will give you a different perspective from what the progressives say. I have not watched it so if it is useful get back to me.
There is more here and eventually the church post the video lessons.
Keep an eye on TCPC’s website for soon to be posted conference video. In the mean time, my good friend Robin Self over at A Worthy Walk was also able to attend, and she has kindly shared her thoughts and notes on the conference with us in her article, A Day With Michelle Lesley.
Another woman just finished a useful series on the women contemplatives. Years ago before I moved away from the Richard Foster, Dallas Willard, etc. teachings which include these “Catholic Saints“ I learned about them. Again if you are influenced by this kind of teaching perhaps it is good to be challenged to a different perspective that what is now commonly taught in the Spiritual Formation classes.
Medieval mystics: Conclusion The link includes all of the series.
Elizabeth Prata has another post today that makes an interesting point.
In my observation Jesus said it this way.
John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:64-66 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. 65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
John 6:39-40 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
John 6:36-37 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. 37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 6 is one of my go to chapters. If I was into memorizing it would be at the top of my list. In the Authorized Version it can’t be much clearer and for a time at least their will be sheep and goats in the Visible Church.
Matthew 25:32-33 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
The Westminster Confession of Faith defines the Church this way.
Of the Church
1. The catholic or universal church, which is invisible, consists of the whole number of the elect, that have been, are, or shall be gathered into one, under Christ the Head thereof; and is the spouse, the body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.
2. The visible church, which is also catholic or universal under the gospel (not confined to one nation, as before under the law), consists of all those throughout the world that profess the true religion; and of their children: and is the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, the house and family of God, out of which there is no ordinary possibility of salvation.
3. Unto this catholic visible church Christ hath given the ministry, oracles, and ordinances of God, for the gathering and perfecting of the saints, in this life, to the end of the world: and doth, by his own presence and Spirit, according to his promise, make them effectual thereunto.
4. This catholic church hath been sometimes more, sometimes less visible. And particular churches, which are members thereof, are more or less pure, according as the doctrine of the gospel is taught and embraced, ordinances administered, and public worship performed more or less purely in them.
5. The purest churches under heaven are subject both to mixture and error; and some have so degenerated, as to become no churches of Christ, but synagogues of Satan. Nevertheless, there shall be always a church on earth, to worship God according to his will.
6. There is no other head of the church but the Lord Jesus Christ. Nor can the pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof.
