Catch of the Week, Faith and Christianity

A Great Place to Start…

We may or may not ever have a call to minister to a person first coming into the realm of faith with no significant background or family history.

The Pastor and his Brother (who also was a pastor) of the small Reformed Church I’m involved with was one of these. Their mother and father were from Punjabi India, and eventually the whole family came to know Chris.

So it can happen, I can’t say their own story was exactly like this. But giving this background and starting in the Book of John is a good beginning.

Luk 24:25  Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

If you read what Luke wrote under the direction of the Holy Spirit in the last chapter of Luke, you get a glimpse of what the Old Testament is about and why it is important to understand it even today:

Luk 24:26  Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

Luk 24:27  And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Repeated here:

Luk 24:44  And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

Luk 24:45  Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

Luk 24:46  And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

Luk 24:47  And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Luk 24:48  And ye are witnesses of these things.

I would add in my reading in John 6 their is a caution and assurance about coming to Christ that few people speak about:

e-Sword

Jhn 6:35  And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Jhn 6:36  But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

Jhn 6:37  All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Jhn 6:38  For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

Jhn 6:39  And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

Jhn 6:40  And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Jhn 6:41  The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

Jhn 6:42  And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

Jhn 6:43  Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

Jhn 6:44  No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Jhn 6:45  It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

Jhn 6:46  Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

Jhn 6:47  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

Jhn 6:48  I am that bread of life.

Jesus repeats what he said in v44 as he ends this discourse.

Jhn 6:64  But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

Jhn 6:65  And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

Jhn 6:66  From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

Jhn 6:67  Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

Jhn 6:68  Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Jhn 6:69  And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
