Zephaniah 1:5 – Reflections on false gods….

Caesarea Philippi – Ancient Greek: Καισαρεία Φιλίππεια or Caesarea Paneas (Καισαρεία Πανειάς); called “Neronias” for a short period of time – was an ancient Roman city located at the southwestern base of Mount Hermon. It was adjacent to a spring, grotto and related shrines dedicated to the Greek god Pan, and called “Paneas” since the Hellenistic period, a name which mutated in time to Banias, as we know it until today (not to be confused with Baniyas in northwestern Syria). The surrounding region was known as the “Panion”. Wikipedia

We visited this area…and walked by the grotto.

In today’s reading we see…

Zep 1:5  And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham;

Reference to another false god a name I didn’t recall seeing before.

Malcham

(“their king”.) Another form of Milcom and Moloch, the idol of Moab and Ammon (Zep 1:5Jer 49:1-3Amo 1:15).

And check out old John Gill’s commentary on the verse.

If you what to purse this further…the names of false gods flow rampant in the OT.

Try googling the above and Pan and Baal.

I tried writing about them but my post self deleted twice…so you will have to look them up yourself.

It’s probably better it did not post.

This stuff is devilish.

I can say that even in today’s news these gods pop up! I mean really in the mainstream media.

And “all” of modern pantheism and panentheism …..are rooted here.
