Leviticus 9 – Another round of offerings and sacrifices

As note previously, this book gives the most detail of the offerings and sacrifices commanded to the God’s people in the Old Testament.

The chapter presents the order of the eighth day:

Leviticus 9:1  And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel;

Which follows what has been presented in chapter 8:

Leviticus 8:35  Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, that ye die not: for so I am commanded.

Aaron and his sons, being consecrated to and invested with the priest’s office, are called upon to the exercise of it, to offer a sin offering and a burnt offering for themselves, and all sorts of offerings, a sin offering, a burnt offering, peace offerings, and a meat offering, for the people; and a promise is made for their encouragement, that the glory of the Lord would appear to them, Lev 9:1 and which were in their course accordingly offered; first, Aaron’s sin offering for himself, Lev 9:8 then his burnt offering, Lev 9:12 after that the several offerings of the people before mentioned, Lev 9:15 when Aaron and Moses blessed the people, the one as soon as he had done offering, and both together when they came out of the tabernacle, Lev 9:22 upon which a fire came forth from the Lord, and consumed the burnt offering upon the altar, Lev 9:24.

The chapter ends on this high point:

Lev 9:23  And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people.

Lev 9:24  And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

Later in Israel’s history during the time of the Temple, Fire and God’s glory came down at the dedication.

2 Chronicles 7:1  Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house.

….and we do see it again at the time of Elijah:

1 Kings 18:38  Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
