Devotional Readings, M'Cheyne Bible Reading Notes

Food, Fowl and Fools….

I’m a day behind, so here are a few quick comments on yesterday’s readings.

Leviticus 11–12

I’m so happy about the dietary rules. Although I do enjoy so much a good pulled pork barbecue. And having grown up in on the east coast, the variety of shell fish. But I am quite happy with the bug ordinances. Although John the Baptist seems to have done well with this staple.

Matthew 3:4  And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Also note from Chapter 12, that this was certainly the custom up to Jesus’ birth.

Lev 12:7  Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female.

Lev 12:8  And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

Luk 2:22  And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

Luk 2:23  (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

Luk 2:24  And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

Psalms 13–14

Psalm 14 gives a good introduction to the Proverbs reading below:

Psalms 14:1  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Proverbs 26

This one is today’s fool’s gold. Take time to listen to Max McLean read it and note the number of references to fools, sluggards and talebearers.

Some think that verse 25 refers back to:

Pro 6:16  These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

Pro 6:17  A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

Pro 6:18  An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

Pro 6:19  A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
